The History of the 718

The 718 was engineered in 1956 in readiness for the 1957 racing season. Porsche designed it to weigh only 530 kilograms and with a mid-engined layout to give it a balanced layout from end to end. It won its first big race in 1958 with the 718 RSK at the 12h of Sebring and then again in 1959 at Targa Florio.

In 1960, Porsche introduced the 718 RS 60, which came with a sleeker styling and more powerful engine options.  The RSK and the RS 60 won the 12h of Sebring and Targa Florio races and more than 1000 other races.

The current models of the 718 came in 2016. After a long time where the 718 was forgotten under the popularity of the 550 and the 911, the engineers at Porsche decided to bring the glory of the 718 back. The 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster models are inspired by the mid-century 718 to bring efficiency, agility, and style.
